about Lena Yasmin

Lena Yasmin is a second-generation Iranian American soprano who is now based in New York after a decade of working and training in Los Angeles. She holds a Master of Music from The Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA, where she attended on scholarships from the Opera UCLA department and Armenian music department. There, she sang the role of Adina in L’elisir d’amore as well as Anne Trulove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress with the UCLA Philharmonia. In 2023, Lena was the only vocalist to receive an honorable mention for selections of Strauss’ Vier letze Lieder in the UCLA Philharmonia All Star Concerto Competition. With the Armenian music department, Lena participated in a series of chamber music concerts with the VEM Ensemble string quartet. While performing in esteemed venues such as Schoenberg Hall, The Hammer Museum and Royce Hall, the VEM Ensemble also took Lena on a public outreach tour throughout the state of California. In 2022, Lena participated as a semifinalist in The Pasadena Vocal Competition and competed in the Los Angeles Chapter of the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, while securing the generous support of several consecutive Opera Buffs Career Grants, culminating in a performance with their annual Young Artist Showcase. Equally fond of choral music, Lena has sung with the UCLA Chamber Singers, CSULA Chamber singers and Donald Brinegar Singers, performing works such as Haydn’s Harmoniemesse, Auerbach’s Symphony no. 6, Vessels of Light. As the soprano soloist at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, Lena performed selections of a new work Mass From Two Worlds composed by music director Ariel Quintana. While pursuing her B.M., she was awarded Second Place with the Southern California Philharmonic Young Artist Competition and competed as a semifinalist with the Lyra New York Competition. At CSULA, Lena performed on campus and out within the Los Angeles community at companies such as Pacific Opera Project and Independent Opera Company. With Guild Opera Company, Lena has performed several roles such as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Mimì in La bohème. Lena will return to Guild Opera as Giorgetta in Il tabarro as well as Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica this winter. From opera and recitals to public outreach, Lena aspires to use her voice to contribute to the visibility and inclusion of Southwest Asian and North African classical musicians performing in North America.
